Title:Intern– Heat Data Collection & Community Engagement Duration: 2 Months Location: Field-based (Assam, Odisha & Karnataka) Positions: 3 (One intern will be placed in each state)
About the Role
We are looking for three motivated and empathetic interns, each of whom will be embedded in a partner organization in one of the following states: Assam, Odisha, or Karnataka.The interns will support primary data collection and community engagement around the theme of heat and its impact on livelihoods and vulnerable communities. Through field immersion, they will play a key role in capturing grassroots insights, lived experiences, and local narratives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Field Data Collection & Documentation
- Plan and conduct structured and semi-structured conversations with community members on heat-related challenges.
- Engage with diverse groups such as farmers, street vendors, home-based workers, and persons with disabilities through site visits & FGDs
- Document insights, stories, and observations in a clear and organized format (written notes, audio recordings, etc.).
- Ensure ethical data collection practices, including informed consent.
2. Community Engagement – “Heat Pe Charcha”
- Plan and organize 4 small-group discussion sessions (“Heat Pe Charcha”) with 5–10 participants each in collaboration with the partner organisations and other relevant stakeholders.
- Themes include: o Heat and Street Vendors & Home-Based Workers o Heat and Disability o Heat and Agriculture
- Facilitate conversations in an engaging and inclusive manner (can be informal/chat or podcast-style).
- Capture key discussion points, quotes, and narratives from each session.
- Ensure recordings (audio, video and photo) are captured for these events ensuring ethical practices
3. Reporting & Synthesis
- Compile field notes and discussion outputs into concise reports (word or PPT formats)
- Highlight key patterns, challenges, and community-driven solutions.
- Support in creating simple communication outputs if required (caselets, summaries, etc.).
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills (especially in local languages).
- Comfort with fieldwork and interacting with diverse communities.
- Good listening and documentation skills.
- Basic ability to synthesize qualitative information.
- Organized and self-driven, with the ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications & Background
- Undergraduate or postgraduate students/recent graduates in: o Social Work / Sociology / Anthropology o Development Studies / Rural Development o Public Health / Environmental Studies o Communications / Journalism
- Prior experience (even minimal) in: o Fieldwork or community engagement o Qualitative research or interviews o Working with NGOs or grassroots organizations
- Additional preferences: o Familiarity with climate change, heat stress, or livelihood issues o Ability to speak local/regional language(s) fluently
