Community Innovation Support Program

Communities from resource constraints regions are among the first to experience the impacts of climate change, facing challenges such as declining productivity, resource scarcity, climate variability, labour costs and limited access to affordable and context-appropriate technologies. With nearly 70% of India's population residing in rural areas and over 40% dependent on agriculture and allied sectors for their livelihoods, climate-related shocks such as droughts, heatwaves, and erratic rainfall continue to exacerbate vulnerabilities. These challenges directly affect livelihoods, particularly for farmers, women, youth, artisans, and micro-entrepreneurs.

TOR for Climate resilient Goatery Livelihood Study

Goat is one of the most important livestock species in rural areas across the developing world. Often called the "poor man's cow," the goat offers a unique combination of utility and resilience - providing milk, meat, hide, and in some cases fibre, while thriving on low-quality fodder and crop residues, requiring relatively modest housing and management, and being less prone to disease than many other livestock species. Goat milk is widely valued for its digestibility and perceived medicinal properties, while goat meat is popular across cultures and geographies.

In several of SELCO Foundation’s focus geographies - Karnataka, Odisha, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur and Nagaland, poultry systems serve as an important livelihood pathway due to their relatively low entry barriers and potential for localised enterprise development.
