Overview

As a Project Architect for SELCO Foundation’s Built Environment team, the candidate will work closely with the Sr. Program Coordinator, as well as other teams in SELCO - on research, design thinking, and concept & design development for healthcare-focused built environment interventions. The role is design-led, with the architect expected to ground design in field research and user needs, develop drawings and presentation material, and support in coordination with ground teams, consultants, and stakeholders during implementation.

  • Conduct field visits to healthcare facilities and community spaces to understand infrastructure gaps, care delivery challenges, and user needs.
  • Engage with frontline health workers, community members, and government officials to co-develop problem statements and uncover design opportunities through a design thinking approach.
  • Carry out spatial and technical assessments of existing facilities, capturing thermal comfort, daylighting, ventilation, infection control, WASH, privacy, and energy access gaps.
  • Synthesise field insights into research briefs, evidence maps, and design frameworks that ground design decisions in real user and operational needs.
  • Lead ideation and concept development for healthcare-focused built environment interventions, exploring multiple design options before arriving at context-appropriate solutions. Review existing literature, relevant government guidelines, and SELCO Foundation’s own learnings on healthcare facility design to inform research and design directions.
  • Develop design concepts and spatial strategies for climate-smart, healthcare-focused BE interventions, translating research insights into responsive architectural solutions.
  • Prepare architectural and construction drawings, presentation graphics, and other visual material, ensuring alignment with user needs, context, climate, and relevant government standards. Develop BoQs, material specifications, and cost estimates in coordination with technical teams.
  • Contribute to the preparation of design guidelines, toolkits, and replicable models for scaling healthcare-focused built environment solutions across geographies.
  • Prepare presentations and reports for internal reviews, partner meetings, and funder reporting; support workshops and co-design sessions as needed.
  • Support coordination across internal SELCO Foundation teams, external consultants, and government stakeholders to help carry design intent through to execution.
  • Support on-ground implementation through periodic site visits, undertaking field travel to project sites for design review and supervision.
  • Maintain project documentation including site visit reports, design revision logs, and progress photographs; contribute to case studies and learning documentation.
  • Support in tracking project milestones, expenditure, and quality benchmarks using project management tools and frameworks
  • Contribute to documentation of learnings, case studies, and replication frameworks for SELCO Foundation’s internal knowledge base and public communication

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture (B.Arch) is essential; postgraduate qualification in sustainable design, public health infrastructure, or development-sector built environment practice is an advantage.
  • 2–4 years of experience in architectural design and project coordination, preferably in the social sector, health infrastructure, or built environment for underserved communities.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparation of architectural drawings (AutoCAD / Revit), presentation graphics (Adobe Suite, SketchUp, or equivalent), and BoQs.
  • Prior exposure to government health facility typologies - including PHCs, Sub-Centres, Anganwadi Centres, or similar - and familiarity with relevant national standards (IPHS, NHM guidelines) is preferred.
  • Experience of working in multi-stakeholder environments involving government bodies, NGOs, community groups, and design consultants.
  • Willingness and ability to undertake regular field travel to rural and semi-urban project sites across states.
  • Strong communication skills in English and Hindi (any other regional language is a plus); ability to communicate design intent to non-technical audiences.

  • Prior experience in participatory design, co-design methodologies, or community engagement processes is a strong advantage.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite; familiarity with project management tools is desirable.
