Background on SELCO's EnergyForHealth program:

The goal of this program is to strengthen delivery of healthcare for over 170 million people by reliably and sustainably powering 25,000 public health facilities in remote, rural, climate and socio-economically vulnerable regions across 11 states in India by 2026.

Healthcare today, without considering the potential services to the un-catered populations in the world, is the 5th most polluting industry. The proposed program can help improve the quality of health services in a decentralized manner, while also making it a less carbon intensive sector. This program can prove to be the low hanging fruit for achieving SDG13 and SDG3 via SDG7. We believe that provision of 100% renewable energy and green building infrastructure for healthcare facilities, will democratize the much needed health services in the remote regions within India and account for future pandemic preparedness.

The Role:

SELCO Foundation is looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about working in the overall sustainable energy sector for last mile communities. The broader goal is to use decentralized renewable energy to facilitate good health, improved well being, last mile delivery of health services, reduced mortality etc. through the integration of climate inclusive technologies into the healthcare services.

The Senior Consultant for Technology is expected to support and scale up sustainable energy access programs and technologies in order to enhance essential services under healthcare. Understanding of Decentralized Renewable Energy (DRE) and its integration within healthcare technologies will be primary while catering to the underserved communities. This position will provide technical advisory on DRE systems to teams working on design, deployment, and post installation monitoring.

The senior consultant for technology position requires technical expertise in Decentralised Renewable Energy (DRE) systems for a range of applications and terrains. The candidate should be able to discern requirements for different end-users and design appropriate systems that cater to the end-user’s needs. The candidate should be able to create benchmarks for pre-existing DRE systems and suggest repeatable templates for new installations across a range of end-users within the public health delivery system.

Key responsibilities for the position:

  • Design end-to-end solutions for complex pre-existing DRE installations that take into account varying climate conditions, user behavior, maintenance challenges, and local community requirements.
  • Lead the team in benchmarking and selecting appropriate technologies within the DRE system design, such as solar panels, inverters, and batteries.
  • Design a template process for health energy assessments to be undertaken by field staff during pre-installation surveys.
  • Design repeatable processes for DRE solution design across the stages of assessment, procurement, deployment, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Design procurement guidelines for the packaged DRE solutions, inclusive of all the sub-components required for a deployment such as solar panels, inverters, batteries, load wiring, etc.
  • Design packaged template solutions for DRE installation design based on public health center requirements, such as Health & Wellness centers (HWCs), Sub-Centers (SCs), Primary Health Centers (PHCs), Community Health Centers (CHCs), Sub- District Hospitals, and District Hospitals (DHs).
  • Oversee new DRE deployment from a design perspective and play an advisory role to ensure design is in line with templates and end-user requirements.
  • Provide advisory on load monitoring technologies such as remote monitoring dashboards and other “Monitoring & Evaluation” technologies to support the Operations & Maintenance teams.
  • Provide advisory on new innovations in DRE design.
  • Travel to meet with vendors, end-users, partners, and decision makers within the government in order to design solutions from an ecosystem lens.
